Castle Hill Studios LLC was founded in October 2001 as an online game company of twenty experienced engineers, designers, artists, and executives based in historic Charlottesville, Virginia. Two CHS members founded and managed nearby Kesmai Studios, one of the first commercial massively-multiplayer online game companies. Their early designs included Isle of Kesmai and Air Warrior. Two others were the co-founders of, and principal designers for, Iron Crown Enterprises. Others were principal players in Kesmai and firms like Microprose, Avalon Hill, and FASA. Two are co-owners of Mayfair Games.

The studio's employees have built and launched online products in environments as diverse as CompuServe, GEnie, and AOL. CHS veterans also created, deployed, and ran the GameStorm online service for years, and have worked with major licenses such as The Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia, Sherlock Holmes, Champions, Battletech, and Aliens. Their online games credits include everything from role-playing to simulations, shooters to card games. They provided management, content lead, and co-design for Microsoft's acclaimed and innovative A.I. cross media game. They've covered topics as diverse as fantasy, mystery, science fiction, and historical air combat.
