He graduated from high school in 1972, spent two years in the military, married his wife Claudia in 1973, and attended university 1975-1978, where he graduated with a major in Chemistry. After college, Klaus apprenticed as a dentist in his father's practice for two years, before going on to get his Masters degree in dentistry in 1983. In 1990, he took over his father's business with two colleagues, where he continued as managing director until 1999 when he retired in order to become a full-time game designer. Klaus and Claudia have two sons and a daughter.
Klaus designed his first game (a predecessor to Barbarossa) in 1981, but at the age of 36, his first game to be published was "Barbarossa und die Rätselmeister" in 1988. Barbarossa won the prestigious German Spiel des Jahres (Game of the Year) that same year. Klaus continued publishing games on a regular basis until he founded his own game company, TM-Spiele, with two other partners. From 1995-1997, Klaus coordinated and developed the Goldsieber game line with TM, and since 1997 he has coordinated the development of the Kosmos game line with TM. In 2002, he founded Catan GmbH/Catan LLC in partnership with his son Guido to manage the development of the Catan franchise.
